Methane leaks wasting gas equal to twice losses from Strait of Hormuz crisis, says IEA

The International Energy Agency (IEA) estimates that methane leaks could annually release around 200 billion cubic meters of gas, equivalent to twice the losses from disruptions at the Strait of Hormuz. Energy sector methane emissions remained near record highs in 2025, with existing technologies potentially reducing them by up to 70%.
